Missing teeth can negatively impact your life in many ways, including appearance, personal relationships, career opportunities, self-confidence, and, most of all, health. Dental implants provide a strong, healthy, and aesthetic solution to tooth loss. However, if you have experienced jawbone atrophy or shrinkage due to prolonged absence of teeth, you may need a bone graft procedure for dental implants to be safely placed.
What is bone grafting?
Bone grafting comprises of a group of procedures which rebuilds or augments the existing jaw bone height and width. Bone grafting procedures are recommended if your jawbone lacks sufficient structure to support the placement of dental implants. This surgical solution involves the placement of supplemental bone tissue onto existing jawbone. This grafted tissue may be sourced from a tissue bank or another part of the body, such as the jaw, hip or rib.
Why would a bone graft be recommended?
Tooth loss, periodontal disease, and dental injury can all lead to the deterioration of jawbone structure. When your jawbone does not have the sufficient height or width to securely anchor a dental implant, a bone graft is often recommended to repair the damage and create the proper environment for implant placement.
Your comfort is our priority
At Contemporary Facial & Oral Surgery, your comfort is our priority. We will recommend appropriate sedation options for your treatment, as well as necessary medication afterward. We will communicate with you throughout to ensure your informed decisions and proper follow-up care for optimal oral health.
What happens next?
Once placed, the graft is given time to heal and integrate with your existing bone, bone graft materials often stimulating natural tissue growth using our body’s natural repair process. When the healing process is complete, we will re-evaluate your bone structure to confirm that you are ready for implant placement. Dr. Stephen Chan or Dr. Aidan Phan will provide a personalized treatment plan for your dental implant treatment.
