Crowding is the result of multiple teeth competing for space in your mouth. If your teeth sufficient space to erupt, crowding may occur. This may cause teeth to grow sideways, push other teeth out of alignment, or even crack a neighboring tooth. Extractions help to create ample space for your teeth to grow and shift properly into position, preventing further complications. Dr. Chan, Dr. Phan, or your orthodontist may recommend the removal of one or more teeth as part of your orthodontic treatment.
When Are Extractions Needed?
Extractions are often used to remedy a crowded smile. Baby teeth that remain after the permanent tooth begins to erupt can cause crowding. Newly erupted wisdom teeth often do not have sufficient space to grow into position. Other causes of crowding can include small mouth, large teeth, and misaligned teeth. Extraction is a solution that helps prevent further complications from these issues. Current or future orthodontic treatment may include the removal of one or more teeth to relieve crowding.
Crowding often occurs during the eruption of wisdom teeth. As they are your last teeth to erupt, space is limited. When this occurs, wisdom teeth can become impacted, or stuck beneath gum tissue, jaw bone, or other teeth. Extraction can relieve pain or discomfort from wisdom teeth that are impacted or those which have erupted sideways due to crowding.
